 | Will do! Sorry for whingeing! I am partially making it up as I go along, so writing something out should stop me contradicting myself as well.

 | dr John made a good point about the /\ format automatically requireing the defenders to turn before hitting a flank attacker... i wonder what happens if you array like | | | | ..?

 | i guess that's closer to the standard ||| though i personally quite like blocking flankers by paddling backwards, so that they're stuck in the corner, and i'm facing the pitch...(ideally :p) mebbe the progression is | | | with a chaser too, so that an attacker down the flank is fielded by one of the rear two with the front guy falling back to take his place, an attacker down the centre is caught early and dealt with by the front dude - leaving the rear two to worry about the sides/second wave... i guess that would help with the main weaknessess of the 4 man (having no pressure on outfield balls, and being able to get all 4 men back to set it up before the opposition scores), but mebbe maintain the strength of picking people up early, and not being overun by one attacker on each side and a third in the centre... actually, i quite like that now i think about it... should probably think about knot theory instead for a bit :( or even | \ /

 | Four man zone definately is no good if the other team don't need to score, because they'll just sit outside and laugh at you. But it's a start from our otherwise random play. I think the initial angle and position whether it's /\ /\ or || || or - ||| or whatever, is a starting point, but once a couple of attackers come in and mess it up a bit, they start to look the same. I think if four defenders each try and keep goal side of attackers in front of the goal, and make sure they're not in the same place you end up with a kind of four man zone/mess which stops shots coming in hopefully. It's definately worth trying out different things though, I just fancy persisting with one for a while until it's a well understood and practised option, then trying different things later.

 | Yeah, I agree we need more variation in our play, however for the start of most games with the A team the standard /\ defense has worked quite well with one fully roaming attacker and the last player sitting in a sort of 'midfield' role just infront of the defense. This means that defense can be quickly turned to attack as you already have the possibility of a two on one break from the outer players if the chance arrives. Having said that, I definately think its worthwhile learning to play in more than one way.

 | This also suggests that the two players who are going to be part of the two on one attack are so far forward that it is them versus the opposition keeper, which leaves four opposition players behind them trying to score against three of their own players.

 | True, it was meant more that the outer most player leads the counter attack and has an oppertunity of one on one, with the other player (the midfielder) arriving slightly later as backup if needed.

 | G, good job on the tactics bit on the website, it explains 4 man zone really well. Everyone should have a look at it, especially if you're new to the game, should really help your understanding.
I find the "midfield" tactic pretty straightforward, but I've heard a lot of people moaning about it confusing them, could you do a similar set of diagrams for it? Muchos gracias.

 | The tactics bit is wicked geez. On top of the "midfield" mentiond by monsieur Quag, an oft point of confusion I see is the idea of "facing out" when trying to break up the enemy zone/the idea of circulation following a slightly unsuccessful zone breakup attempt. Brilliant diagrams and explanations on the 4 man zone.

 | Cheers. Let me know what you mean by midfield, probably in a pub where hand gestures and carefully arranged beer-mats are available. I'm not sure myself. I'll have a go at the circulation thing. By 'facing out' do you mean paddling back out of the zone once another player is coming in?
